An early version of a Superstrat, the guitar was made from a Northern Ash Stratocaster body, with pickup routing which Van Halen modified to fit a Gibson PAF humbucking pickup in the bridge position. The guitar has a maple neck and fretboard, chrome hardware, and was painted with a white over black design. This gave the appearance of a white guitar with black stripes. Later, red was painted over the original black and white. This now gave the appearance of a red guitar but was, in fact, just a third color sprayed over the original design. It has a standard six-string setup and a Floyd Rose tremolo.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, many guitar companies tried to capitalize on Van Halen's popularity by manufacturing Frankenstrat replicas. In 1979, Eddie replaced the original black pickguard with a white pickguard and added a Mighty Mite single coil with a red phenolic bobbin on neck. He later replaced the white pickguard with a cut up black vinyl record, covered the back with aluminum foil, and replaced the Gibson humbucker pickup with one from the "Bumblebee" guitar. In 1981, he replaced the vinyl record with a trimmed piece of a 3-ply black Fender pickguard to cover the control cavity. To confuse imitators, he screwed a three-way switch sideways into the middle position cavity, replaced the previous humbucker with a Seymour Duncan pickup, and replaced the neck with the "Bumblebee" guitar's neck. In an interview, Eddie admitted the single-coil pickup and middle switch were not connected to anything.

PRINCE - "The Cloud"

Prince was a different kind of rock star, and one of the things that made him such an enigmatic figure was his flair and unique style, something that was embodied in his unique taste in instruments. There’s one custom guitar that stands apart from all the others he used in his career, however – a custom instrument that Prince was first seen playing in the film Purple Rain, and would become perhaps his most iconic and beloved instrument as the film and its accompanying album became a global megahit – The Cloud. The film was but one part of Prince’s multi-media plan for Purple Rain, and he would go on to use The Cloud on the platinum-selling soundtrack album of the same name. Three more Cloud guitars were built for Prince for the Purple Rain tour. All of these guitars were refinished multiple times. The fretmarkers are decals rather than inlays and were changed over the years. After the Parade tour, the original Cloud was used taken on the road less frequently. Clouds 2 and 3 were used on the Sign O The Times and Lovesexy tours, whilst Cloud 4 was bought back for Batman and Graffiti Bridge.

SLASH - "Jessica"

Slash’s Gibson Les Paul, famously nicknamed "Jessica," is a 1987 (not 1958, although it is styled in the '50s tradition) Gibson Les Paul Standard that became his primary live guitar starting around 1988. Unlike many of his other famous guitars, which were custom-built replicas, "Jessica" is a production-line guitar that Gibson sent him as a replacement when he needed a reliable, durable guitar for touring with Guns N' Roses. In the late 1980s, after Slash's primary Appetite for Destruction recording guitar (a 1959 replica by Kris Derrig) was deemed too fragile for the road, he needed new instruments. Gibson sent him two Les Pauls, one of which was a "factory second" with a three-piece top and minor imperfections, which he began using live.

Slash has stated that he named the guitar "Jessica" while drunk and does not remember the specific catalyst for the name. "Jessica" quickly became his go-to live instrument. He initially used it in its original Cherry Sunburst finish, but later had it refinished with a "duller," more muted look. It was used throughout the Appetite for Destruction tour, Use Your Illusion era, and during his time with Velvet Revolver.

Over the years, the guitar suffered significant wear and tear, including a broken neck during a live show.
