Bruce Springsteen is an icon of the American musical landscape and one of the greatest songwriters of a generation. Through the years, he has relied heavily on one instrument in the studio and his marathon live performances – a frankensteined telecaster that he dubbed "The Mutt".

"The Mutt" is a heavily modified early 1950’s Fender guitar—featuring an Esquire neck on a Telecaster body—purchased for $185 in the early 1970’s. It has been his primary instrument for over 50 years, used on nearly all recordings and tours, famed for its battered appearance.

Springsteen pulled the guitar out of his touring rotation in 2005 and only occasionally brings it back out, mostly for special events like the 2009 Super Bowl Halftime Show. Today, Springsteen makes do with an army of clone guitars, modified to mimic the original Mutt’s sound and weight as closely as possible. Still, there’s only one Mutt.  In a 2021 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2021. Springsteen brought The Mutt and talked about it, "I've played this guitar for 50 years. I bought it when I was 22 years-old for $185 in Belmar, New Jersey.  It's kind of a Mutt, it's made-up of two different guitars. But this guitar has been in every club, theater, arena and stadium across America, and most of the world!”  He refers to the Telecaster as being a part of his body, while every other guitar he plays is just a guitar. This is a powerful statement that puts the instrument's importance into perspective.
